چکیده

This work-in-progress describes a novel approach to support freshman engineering students entering college with low math competencies in pre-calculus. Institutions across the nation are making significant efforts to develop K-12 programs and summer camps to recruit more ethnic minorities into engineering to better support the growing needs for diversity in industry workforce. However, while a diverse freshman-engineering cohort is essential, it is even more important that schools provide students with adequate support to be successful in their freshman year and thus increase their chances to be retained and graduate with an engineering degree. In particular, first generation and low-income students may enter college without proper academic preparation with fundamentals in mathematics, which may lead to low academic performance during their first year in engineering and impact their retention in engineering. To address this issue, engineering schools are investing resources in developing and offering remediation programs to ensure underrepresented minority students acquire the necessary foundational skills to be successful in their first calculus, physics and engineering courses in college. In this large public institution, all incoming engineering freshmen are required to take a math placement exam, which determines if they are calculus ready for their first mathematics course. This work-in-progress describes interventions, such as co-enrollment of students in a precalculus and engineering projects in community service courses, to assist students who scored very low on this exam in building a mathematical foundation with an engineering framework. At the end of fall semester, students had improved pre-calculus skills (13.8 points) and 86.4% were retained in engineering. The findings of this study will provide further contributions to research on the retention of students who enter engineering requiring remediation in mathematics.

Comparative Study of the Academic Vocabulary Content of Electronic Engi-neering Corpora, GE Materials and M.S. Entrance Examinations

The importance of vocabulary learning has been underlined in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) because non-English majors who require reading English texts in their fields of study have to expand their English vocabulary knowledge much more efficiently than ordinary ESL/EFL learners. Since academic vocabulary instruction in Iranian universities is realized through the use of Gene...

Ac 2011-2447: Closing the Design Loop in Freshman Engi- Neering

Teaching engineering design and graphics to a freshman class presents the challenge of balancing prescribed lessons vs. open-ended questions. Given that few students have experience with the design process, and fewer still have formalized designs using CAD software, the teaching process is often one of demonstration. Given time constraints there is rarely time to visit the topics of verificatio...

Assessing Students’ Moral Reasoning of a Values-Based Education

Students’ moral reasoning was assessed at a religiously affiliated liberal arts university. Cohort data were collected from undergraduate students who had entered the university as freshmen: 364 students in 2007 and 264 students in 2009. The results indicated that there was a significant increase in students’ post-conventional moral reasoning scores between freshmen and seniors and a significan...

Cden/rcci: a Canadian Network to Enhance Design Engi- Neering Education

Design engineering is critical to the well being of every developed country. The value, efficiency, environmental impact, and consumer appeal of a product are all set by design. There is even evidence that design impacts students’ intellectual development positively [1]. However, design practice, research, and education have not been highly valued in Canadian universities. Within this environme...
